Vacation Picspam #1: Washington DC
Whenever both of us are in town (as he lives in Texas now) my nephew and I go into DC and each time I get to place a check next to the sites in the guidebook.

We left Tuesday around 9:30am and drove to the Metro station, taking the Green Line straight in to the Smithsonian stop which is right on The Mall. Our first stop: the Washington Monument. Now, they do have tickets on sale for tours that day, but they go quickly. On a previous trip we learned you can order them online so that's what we did.

From just outside the Metro stop
From the base of the monument looking towards the WWII Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial.
Looking towards the White House.
Towards the Capitol.

This next batch are shots from the top of the monument.

WWII Memorial

Arlington National Cemetary

JFK and Jackie
The view of DC from in front of the gravesite
Bobby Kennedy
view of the city from in front of Arlington House, the one-time home of Robert E. Lee and the highest point
The Front facade of Arlington House (currently under renovation)
Tomb of the Unknowns
Memorial Amphitheatre

Just Outside Arlington

OK, my feet are really aching at this point but there was no way in hell I was this close and not going to see it. First off, another view of the city on the way to the next thing

The USMC Memorial, aka the Iwo Jima Statue (Dad was in the Marines in the South Pacific during WW2)

OK, we then walk to a different (but closer) Metro station and head back into DC. After a meal at the Hard Rock, we head to the National Archives to see the "Charters of Freedom" as they are called. The lighting is dim to help the preservation and we rushed a bit so some of the pics are a bit blurred.

An original copy of the Magna Carta
The Declaration of Independence. As you can see, it's very faded
If you look closely, you can see the famous "John Hancock" signature
The first page of the Constitution

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the end of the first holiday picspam. Tomorrow will be choice bits from the rehersal dinner
