Transcript: Planet of the Ood

A single figure is silhouetted by a spotlight, then two more one behind on either side.

MALE VOICE OVER: The Ood. They came from a distant world...(kaleidoscope effect) They voyaged across the stars, all with one purpose...

OOD: Do you take milk and sugar?

MALE VOICE OVER: ...to serve.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

A suited executive, MR BARTLE, is standing in his office watching the ad. There is an Ood standing in the background.

MR BARTLE
(into comm.) That's good. That's excellent. I like it. "Buy one now." Direct. Straight to the point.

MR HALPEN:
(over comm) We play that across the tri-galactic for two weeks, then introduce this.

MALE VOICE OVER:
Now only 50 credits.

MR BARTLE:
50? We're reducing the price to 50 credits?

MR HALPEN:
Sales are down. We've got to reposition ourselves. So get going.

MR BARTLE:
(ends comm.) Idiot! He's bleeding us dry. (to Ood) You there! Get me last month's military export figures. The army always needs more grunts. (sits at desk)

OOD:
Yes, sir.

SOLANA:
(over intercom) Mr Bartle, you asked me to contact you?

MR BARTLE:
Solana, when those buyers arrive, we're gonna pitch like never before. I want those Ood flying out of here.

The Ood returns and places a binder on the desk in front of MR BARTLE.

MR BARTLE
I said military figures. That's the domestic file. (hands it back without looking)

OOD
(slams file down) The file is irrelevant, sir. (its eyes are now red)

MR BARTLE
(turns) Oh, and why is that?

The Ood places his translator ball to MR BARTLE'S head, electrocuting him.

OOD
Have a nice day.

INT. TARDIS

Inside the TARDIS, the DOCTOR and DONNA get jostled about before materializing.

DOCTOR
Set the controls to random! Mystery tour. Outside that door could be any planet, anywhere, anywhen in the whole wide-are you all right?

DONNA
Terrified. I mean, history's one thing, but an alien planet...

DOCTOR
I could always take you home.

DONNA
Yeah, don't laugh at me.

DOCTOR
I know what it's like-everything you're feeling right now. The fear, the joy, the wonder-I get that!

DONNA
Seriously? After all this time?

DOCTOR
Yeah! Why do you think I keep going?

DONNA
Oh! All right, then, you and me both! This is barmy! (walks to the door as the DOCTOR puts on his coat) I was born in Chiswick. I've only ever done package holidays. Now I'm here. This is-I mean, it's-I dunno. It's all so-I don't even know what the word is!

EXT. DAY.

DONNA opens the door and steps out onto the planet where it is snowing and the wind is howling.

DONNA
Oh, I've got the word. "Freezing".

The DOCTOR joins her.

DOCTOR
Snow! Ah! Real snow! Proper snow at last! That's more like it. Lovely. What do you think?

DONNA
(shivers) Bit cold.

DOCTOR
Look at the view!

Ice and snow cover a barren landscape.

DONNA
Yep. A beautiful...cold view.

DOCTOR
Millions of planets, millions of galaxies and we're on this one. Molto bene! Belissimo! Says Donna, born in Chiswick. You've had a life of work and sleep, (walks away from DONNA and the TARDIS) telly and rent, takeaway dinners, birthdays and Christmases, and two weeks holiday a year and then you end up here! Donna Noble, citizen of the Earth, standing on a different planet. How about that, Donna? (turns around and she's gone) Donna?

DONNA comes back out wearing a warm coat with a fur-lined hood.

DONNA
Sorry. You were saying?

DOCTOR
Better?

DONNA
Lovely, thanks.

DOCTOR
Comfy?

DONNA
Yep.

DOCTOR
Can you hear anything inside that?

DONNA
Pardon?

DOCTOR
Right. I was saying, citizen of the Earth-

At that moment a rocket flies overhead.

DONNA
A rocket. Blimey, a real, proper rocket. Now that's what I call a spaceship. (slaps him on the arm) You've got a box-he's got a Ferrari. Come on, let's see where it's going.

The DOCTOR looks surprised. He looks back at the TARDIS before following DONNA.

EXT. DAY, WAREHOUSE

Outside of a warehouse that seems to be part of a plant, the rocket has landed. MR HALPEN arrives with his personal Ood and two guards. They are met by DR RYDER in a white lab coat.

RYDER
Mr Halpen, sir. Dr Ryder, new Head of Ood Management. (holds out hand but HALPEN ignores it)

HALPEN
How many dead? Come on, facts and figures. I haven't flown all this way to discuss the weather. Which, by the way, is freezing.

RYDER
Solana has the figures, sir.

A young woman joins them.

SOLANA
Solana Mercurio, sir. Head of Marketing and Galactic Liaison.

HALPEN
Just what I need-a PR woman. I don't want a word of this getting out-is that understood? Now, get to the point-how many dead?

They all walk inside.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

In BARTLE'S former office, SOLANA explains what's been going on as they watch video of what happened to BARTLE.

SOLANA
In the past financial quarter, we've had three deaths in the complex, all attributed to heart attacks or industrial accidents. But now we've captured this on tape-the cause would seem the same.

HALPEN
Using the translator ball as a weapon. How does that work?

RYDER
No idea. I'm checking the equipment. Nothing so far.

HALPEN
Can't see its eyes from this angle.

RYDER
I think we have to assume-

HALPEN
Red-eye.

RYDER
I would think so, sir.

HALPEN
That Ood-what happened to it?

RYDER
Oh, ran for the hills, sir, like a dog. One of the guards fired off a shot. It'll be dead by now.

SOLANA
Can I ask, what is red-eye, sir?

RYDER
It's some sort of infection. The Ood eyes literally change colour.

HALPEN
Drink.

HALPEN'S Ood servant prepares a drink.

RYDER
I can't find a source. All the bacterial scans register negative.

SOLANA
I'm sorry, but according to your own rules, sir, there's no alcohol allowed on base.

HALPEN
(accepts glass from the Ood) It's hair tonic, if you must know. (gulps it down) Five years ago I had a full head of hair. Stress. (taps head) That's what this is-stress!

EXT. DAY

The DOCTOR and DONNA walk through the snowy landscape, laughing at the experience. The DOCTOR stops at the sound of ethereal music.

DOCTOR
Hold on-can you hear that? Donna, take your hood down.

DONNA
(lowers hood) What?

DOCTOR
That noise-it's like a song. (spots something in the distance) Over there! (runs)

They find the body of an Ood half-buried in the snow.

DONNA
What is it?

DOCTOR
(kneels by the body) An Ood. He's called an Ood. (pulls out stethoscope)

DONNA
But its face...

DOCTOR
Donna, not now. It's a "he", not an "it". Give me a hand.

DONNA
(kneels on other side) Sorry.

The DOCTOR moves the stethoscope about the Ood's chest.

DOCTOR
I don't know where the heart is. I don't know if he's got a heart. Talk to him. Keep him going.

DONNA
(to Ood) It's all right. We've got you. Um...what's your name?

OOD DELTA 50
Designated Ood Delta 50.

DONNA
(speaks into translator ball) My name's Donna.

DOCTOR
No, no, no, no. You don't need to.

DONNA
Sorry. Oh, God-this is the Doctor. Just what you need--a doctor. Couldn't be better, eh?

DOCTOR
You've been shot.

OOD DELTA 50
The circle-

DONNA
No, don't try to talk.

OOD DELTA 50
The circle must be broken.

DOCTOR
The circle? What do you mean? Delta 50, what circle? Delta 50? What circle?

DELTA 50 opens his eyes and they're red. The DOCTOR and DONNA scramble back as he growls and sits up. The growl fades away and he collapses, dead.

DONNA
He's gone. (walks towards body)

DOCTOR
Careful.

DONNA
(places a hand on his chest) There you are, sweetheart. (strokes his head) We were too late. What do we do, do we bury him?

DOCTOR
The snow will take care of that.

DONNA
Who was he? What's an Ood?

DOCTOR
They're servants-of humans in the 42nd century. Mildly telepathic. That was the song-it was his mind calling out.

DONNA
I couldn't hear anything. (stands) He sang as he was dying.

DOCTOR
His eyes turned red.

DONNA
What's that mean?

DOCTOR
Trouble. Come on. (walks away) The Ood are harmless and completely benign. Except the last time I met them, there was this force, like a stronger mind, powerful enough to take them over.

DONNA
What sort of force?

DOCTOR
Long story.

DONNA
Long walk.

DOCTOR
It was the devil.

DONNA
If you're gonna take the mickey, I'll just put my hood back up.

DOCTOR
Must be something different this time, though. Something closer to home. (peers over a bluff) A-ha! Civilization!

Below them is the base of Ood Operations.

EXT. DAY, WAREHOUSE

The anticipated group of buyers arrives and is greeted by SOLANA.

SOLANA
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Ood-Sphere and isn't it bracing? Here are your information packs with vouchers, 3D tickets and a map of the complex. (an Ood passes them out) My name's Solana, Head of Marketing. I'm sure we've all spoken on the vid-phone. Now if you'd like to follow me-

The DOCTOR and DONNA come running up.

DOCTOR
Sorry, sorry! We're late! Don't mind us! Hello. The guards let us through.

SOLANA
And you would be-

DOCTOR
(holds up psychic paper) The Doctor and Donna Noble.

DONNA
Representing the Noble Corporation, PLC Limited, Intergalactic.

SOLANA
Must have fallen off my list. My apologies, it won't happen again. Now then, Dr Noble, Mrs Noble, if you'd like to come with me.

DOCTOR
Oh, no, no, no. We're not married.

DONNA
We're so not married.

DOCTOR
Never.

DONNA
Never ever.

SOLANA
Of course. Here is your information pack. Vouchers inside. (hands DOCTOR packet) Now, if you'd like to come with me, the executive suites are nice and warm.

An alarm blares.

DOCTOR
(pauses going inside) Ooh, what's that? Sounds like an alarm.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

HALPEN
For God's sake, we've got buyers arriving. Who sounded the alarm? Drink!

EXT. DAY, WAREHOUSE

SOLANA
It's just a siren for the end of the work shift. Now then, this way! Quick as you can!

As the buyers file inside, SOLANA'S smile drops as she wonders what's going on.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

HALPEN
(into comm.) Mr Kess, what the hell's going on?

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

MR KESS, chief of security is with other guards. He speaks into his comm. to HALPEN.

KESS
Ood on the loose, sir. Looks like we've got another one.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

HALPEN
Red-eye?

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

KESS
As red as sin, sir. Don't worry, Mr Halpen, we're on it.

The Ood runs out behind the patrol. One of the guards spots it.

GUARD
Sir!

KESS
All right, lads, go! Get him! (they chase after the Ood)

INT. OOD "SHOWROOM"

SOLANA is expounding the qualities of the Ood. Some are on pedestals for display. There is a large screen behind her that covers the wall.

SOLANA
As you can see, the Ood are happy to serve and we keep them in facilities of the highest standards.

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

The Ood runs for its life from KESS and the guards.

INT. OOD "SHOWROOM"

SOLANA
Here at the Double-O-that's Ood Operations-we like to think of the Ood as our trusted friends.

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

KESS
He's over there! You two follow me!

INT. OOD "SHOWROOM"

SOLANA
We keep the Ood healthy, safe and educated.

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

KESS
Take him alive!

INT. OOD "SHOWROOM"

SOLANA
We don't just breed the Ood, we make them better.

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

The Ood cowers behind some barrels.

INT. OOD "SHOWROOM"

SOLANA
Because at heart, what is an Ood...but an extension of us?

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

KESS and his men find the Ood.

INT. OOD "SHOWROOM"

SOLANA
If your Ood is happy...

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

KESS raises his weapon and the Ood turns, growling, red eyes blazing

INT. OOD "SHOWROOM"

SOLANA
Then you'll be happy too. (buyers applaud)

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

KESS
(into comm.)Mr Halpen, this is a bit more than red-eye, sir. (the Ood is foaming at the mouth) This is something new. It's rabid, sir.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

HALPEN
Take it to Dr Ryder. Just...get it out of sight!

MALE VOICE
(over comm.)Sales figures needed by 1900, sir.

HALPEN
(into comm.)Yeah, yeah, yeah. (frustrated, he gets up from desk and walks to mirror, his Ood following) What do you think? Growing back? Just a little bit?

(the Ood simply blinks) Like you'd know.

INT. OOD "SHOWROOM"

SOLANA
I'd now like to point out a new innovation from Ood Operations. We've introduced a variety package with the Ood translator ball. You can now have the standard setting-How are you today, Ood?

GUARD
(normal voice) I'm perfectly well, thank you.

SOLANA
Or perhaps after a stressful day, a little something for the gentlemen. How are you, Ood?

GUARD
(sultry female voice) All the better for seeing you.

SOLANA
And the comedy classic option. Ood, you dropped something.

GUARD
(as Homer Simpson) D'oh!

Everyone chuckles.

SOLANA
All that for only five additional credits. The details are in your brochures. Now, there's plenty more food and drink, so don't hold back.

The DOCTOR puts on his glasses and heads to the control board where he switches on the screen while DONNA gets a drink. She joins him as the screen shows their location.

DOCTOR
Ah, got it. The Ood-Sphere. I've been to this solar system before-years ago. Ages. Close to the planet Sense-Sphere. Let's widen it out...the year 4126. That is the Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire.

DONNA
4126? It's 4126? I'm in 4126?

DOCTOR
It's good, isn't it?

DONNA
What's the Earth like now?

DOCTOR
A bit full, but you see, the empire stretches out across three galaxies.

DONNA
It's weird. I mean, it's brilliant, but...back home, the papers and the telly, they keep saying we haven't got long to live-global warming, flooding, all the bees disappearing.

DOCTOR
Yeah. That thing about the bees is odd.

DONNA
But look at us-we're everywhere. Is that good or bad, though? I mean, are we like explorers or more like a virus?

DOCTOR
Sometimes I wonder.

DONNA
What are the red dots?

DOCTOR
Ood distribution centres.

DONNA
Across three galaxies? Don't the Ood get a say in this? (walks over to Ood #1) Um...sorry, but... (she taps it gently) Hello. Tell me, are you all like this?

GUARD
I do not understand, miss.

DONNA
Why do you say, "miss"? Do I look single?

DOCTOR
Back to the point.

DONNA
Yeah. What I mean is, are there any free Ood? Are there any Ood running wild somewhere like wildebeest?

GUARD
All Ood are born to serve. Otherwise we would die.

DONNA
You can't have started like that. Before the humans (the Ood's head jerks slightly) what were you like?

GUARD
The circle.

DOCTOR
What do you mean? What circle?

GUARD
The circ-the circle-is-

SOLANA
Ladies and gentlemen. All Ood to hospitality stations, please. (the Ood leave)

The DOCTOR takes off his glasses and reaches into his pocket for the map of the complex.

DOCTOR
I've had enough of the schmoozing. Do you fancy going off the beaten track?

DONNA
A Rough Guide to the Ood-Sphere? Works for me.

DOCTOR
Yeah.

INT., CELLS

HALPEN, RYDER and OOD SIGMA are in the cell where the Red-Eye is chained. It is growling and spitting.

HALPEN
What the hell's wrong with it?

RYDER
It's obviously Stage 2 Red-Eye. Whatever that means.

HALPEN
Ood Sigma, have you seen this before?

SIGMA
Humanity defines us, sir. We look to you for answers.

HALPEN
Fat lot of good, all of you. We're exporting hundreds of thousands of Ood to all civilized planets. If they turn rabid, you know what it'll mean.

RYDER
There's only one thing I haven't checked, sir-Warehouse 15.

HALPEN
Why should that cause trouble? It's been two centuries now. No change, not ever. Drink!

SIGMA prepares his drink.

RYDER
I know it's restricted access, but if I'm gonna work on this, I should see it. Just in case.

HALPEN
Can't stand the place. (gulps down drink) Still, Warehouse 15, then. Come on. (heads out door)

RYDER
What about this one, sir?

HALPEN
Well, I'd suggest a post-mortem, which means it's gotta be dead first. (walks out)

The chained Ood's growls become more enraged. Two guards step forward and we hear gunshots.

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

The DOCTOR and DONNA find a locked gate. The DOCTOR uses the sonic screwdriver on the lock.

VOICE OVER P.A.
Ood Shift 8 commencing. (The DOCTOR opens the gate) I repeat, Ood Shift 8 commencing.

The DOCTOR and DONNA find themselves in a part of the complex closed to visitors. They climb up some steps and look down into an open area where the Ood are being marched. One falls to its knees and KESS walks over to it.

KESS
Get up. I said, get up! (cracks whip)

DONNA
Servants? They're slaves.

KESS
Get up! (the Ood stands) March!

DOCTOR
Last time I met the Ood, I never thought, never asked...

DONNA
That's not like you.

DOCTOR
I was busy. So busy I couldn't save them. I had to let the Ood die. I reckon I owe them one.

HALPEN, RYDER and SIGMA walk across the open space.

DONNA
(whispers) That looks like the boss.

DOCTOR
Let's keep out of his way. Come on.

EXT. DAY, OUTSIDE WAREHOUSE 15

RYDER
How long since you went inside?

HALPEN
Must be ten years ago. (enters code on keypad)

COMPUTER
Warehouse 15...

HALPEN
My father brought me here when I was six years old.

COMPUTER
Security protocol initiated.

HALPEN
God, the stench of it!

COMPUTER
Warehouse 15-door open.

INT. WAREHOUSE 15

Inside, HALPEN holds his hand to his mouth while RYDER holds a handkerchief over his nose and mouth. They stop and look down over a railing at something. There is also an electric, crackling sound.

RYDER
Incredible.

HALPEN
Like I said, nothing's changed.

RYDER
I've read the documents, but...it doesn't quite prepare you.

HALPEN
Is it just me, or does it feel like it's looking at you?

RYDER
I think I understand the border mechanics well enough. I'll check the signal. (goes to nearby panel)

HALPEN
I suppose it's home sweet home to you. What do you think?

SIGMA
I have no opinion, sir.

HALPEN
Well...say hello to daddy.

RYDER
Nothing. The barrier's intact. No abnormal signal. Same as it's been for 200 years.

SOLANA
(over comm.) Mr Halpen, those two people from the Noble Corporation failed to pass security checks.

INT. OOD "SHOWROOM"

SOLANA
There's no such company. The Noble Corporation doesn't exist. And on top of that, they seem to have gone missing, sir, the Doctor and Miss Noble.

INT. WAREHOUSE 15

HALPEN
Just what I need. Start a search. No alarms, got that? Keep it quiet. (turns off comm.) You see? Hair loss. Drink! (takes drink from SIGMA and leans over railing) Tell you what, old friend...have this one on me. Cheers. (pours drink over the side. There is a loud whooshing and roaring. HALPEN has SIGMA refill his drink) I think we're done here. (gulps down drink and leaves)

RYDER
(bumps into SIGMA) Sorry. (follows HALPEN)

SIGMA looks over the rail before following.

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

The DOCTOR and DONNA are striding in front of warehouses, the DOCTOR looking at the map of the complex. DONNA stops at a door and whistles loudly. The DOCTOR ducks and turns back.

DOCTOR
Where did you learn to whistle?

DONNA
West Ham, every Saturday.

The DOCTOR uses the sonic screwdriver on the door and it slides open.

INT. WAREHOUSE, "OOD CARGO"

They walk into a warehouse that is filled with shipping containers. Above them, a large metal claw moves along a track in the ceiling lifting and moving the containers.

DOCTOR
Ood Export. You see? (points to claw) Lifts up the containers, takes 'em to the rocket ships. Ready to be flown out all over the three galaxies.

DONNA
What, you mean- These containers are full of...

DOCTOR
What do you think?

The DOCTOR opens the nearest container and they stand in the doorway. The Ood stand inside in formation.

DONNA
Oh, it stinks. How many of 'em do you think there are in each one?

DOCTOR
A hundred? More?

DONNA
A great, big empire, built on slavery.

DOCTOR
It's not so different from your time.

DONNA
Oi, I haven't got slaves.

DOCTOR
Who do you think made your clothes?

DONNA
Is that why you travel round with a human at your side? It's not so you can show them the wonders of the universe, it's so you can take cheap shots.

DOCTOR
Sorry.

DONNA
Well, don't. Spaceman. (DOCTOR smirks) I don't understand, the door was open- Why didn't you just run away?

GUARD
For what reason?

DONNA
You could be free.

GUARD
I do not understand the concept.

DONNA
What is it with that Persil ball? I mean, they're not born with it, are they? Why do they have to be all plugged in?

DOCTOR
Ood, tell me, does "the circle" mean anything to you?

ALL OOD
The circle must be broken.

DONNA
Whoa, that is creepy.

DOCTOR
But what is it? What is the circle?

ALL OOD
The circle must be broken.

DOCTOR
Why?

ALL OOD
So that we can sing.

KESS is there with two guards.

KESS
(into comm.) Mr Halpen, I'm in Ood cargo. I found your unwanted guests. (to guards) Go! (hits alarm)

Alarms begin to blare.

DOCTOR
That's us, come on!

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

HALPEN
Cut the alarms. I said no alarms!

INT. OOD "SHOWROOM"

SOLANA
Nothing to worry about, ladies and gentlemen. It's just a fire drill. We test the alarm at this time every day. If you'll excuse me.

INT. WAREHOUSE, "OOD CARGO"

The DOCTOR and DONNA run the maze through the shipping containers. DONNA stops but the DOCTOR keeps going.

DONNA
Doctor! There's a door!

The door opens and guards rush in.

GUARD
Don't move!

The DOCTOR stops and realizes DONNA isn't with him.

DOCTOR
Where have you gone?

GUARD
(in distance) Stay where you are!

The DOCTOR continues running as guards find him. The other guards shove DONNA towards a container.

GUARD
Keep her there for now.

The guards push a protesting DONNA into a container with some Ood. KESS moves to a catwalk and looks down as the DOCTOR runs.

DOCTOR
Donna? Where are you?!

KESS
(into comm.) All guards withdraw.

GUARD
(over comm.) Sir?

KESS
I said withdraw. Keep to the perimeter. I've got this one.

The DOCTOR stops and presses himself against a container, listening.

KESS
(turns on equipment) I've always wanted to do this.

The claw begins to move as KESS steers it. The DOCTOR runs and tries to get into a container.

KESS
(presses button on panel) Container locked. Ha!

The DOCTOR runs as the claw chases after him. KESS is clearly having too much fun piloting it. He sends it smashing down, narrowly missing the DOCTOR.

INT. OOD CONTAINER

DONNA
Can you help me? (one of the Ood raises its head. It's gone red-eye) Oh, no you don't.

INT. WAREHOUSE, "OOD CARGO"

The claw gains on the DCOTOR as he begins to tire. Up at the controls, KESS laughs maniacally.

INT. OOD CONTAINER

DONNA
What have I done? I'm not one of that lot. I'm on your side!

INT. WAREHOUSE, "OOD CARGO"

The claw narrowly misses the Doctor causing him to fall and roll on the floor. He gets up and continues running.

INT. OOD CONTAINER

DONNA
Stay where you are, that's an order! I said stay! Doctor! Doctor!

INT. WAREHOUSE, "OOD CARGO"

The claw knocks the DOCTOR over some barrels and he lands on his back. KESS releases the claw and it drops. Another hand turns off the control, halting the claw inches from the DOCTOR as he lies there, panting.

SOLANA
You heard the instructions. Mr Halpen wants them alive.

INT. OOD CONTAINER

DONNA
Doctor, get me out!

INT. WAREHOUSE, "OOD CARGO"

Two guards bring the DOCTOR back to the container holding DONNA. Though still inside, they can hear her voice.

DONNA
Doctor, get me out of here!

DOCTOR
If you don't do what she says, you're really in trouble. Not from me--from her.

KESS
Unlock the container.

They open the door and DONNA runs to the DOCTOR and hugs him.

DONNA
Doctor!

DOCTOR
There we go, safe and sound.

DONNA
Never mind about me, what about them?

The red-eyes leave the container and begin killing the guards.

KESS
Red alert! Fire! (the guards open fire on the Ood. The DOCTOR and DONNA escape. Another container opens and more Ood exit) Shoot to kill!

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

The DOCTOR and DONNA and SOLANA escape the warehouse. They run far enough away before stopping for breath.

DONNA
If the people back on Earth knew what was going on here...

SOLANA
Don't be stupid. Of course they know.

DONNA
They know how you treat the Ood?

SOLANA
They don't ask. Same thing.

DOCTOR
Solana, the Ood aren't born like this. They can't be. A species born to serve could never evolve in the first place. What does the company do to make them obey?

SOLANA
That has nothing to do with me.

DOCTOR
What, because you don't ask?

SOLANA
That's Dr Ryder's territory.

DOCTOR
Where is he? What part of the complex? (holds out map) I could help with the red-eye. Now show me!

SOLANA
(after long pause) They're over here! Guards, they're over here!

The DOCTOR and DONNA run off as the guards catch up.

KESS
Male and female suspects escaping. Westbridge corridor.

SOLANA
(stunned, into comm.) Mr Halpen, I found the Doctor. He's heading for Ood Conversion.

HALPEN
(over comm.) On my way.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

HALPEN
Mr Kess, what's the situation?

INT. WAREHOUSE

KESS
We've contained it, sir. The red-eye seems to be permanent this time, it's not fading. (passes fenced area of red-eyes just standing) Worse than that, sir, there's more of them going rabid. (another fenced area of red-eyes are growling and pulling on the fence) In my opinion, sir, I think we've lost them-the entire batch contaminated.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

HALPEN
What's causing it? Why now? What's changed? (rubs head and a chunk of hair comes out in his hand. Speaks into comm.) How many Ood in total?

INT. WAREHOUSE

KESS
I would say about 2000, sir.

HALPEN
(over comm.) We can write them off. That's what insurance is for.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

HALPEN
(to SIGMA) Drink. We've plenty more on the breeding forms. Let's start again. (gulps drink before speaking to KESS) Fetch the canisters.

INT. WAREHOUSE

HALPEN
(over comm.) No survivors.

KESS
My pleasure, sir. (to guards) You lot, canisters.

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

The DOCTOR and DONNA change direction after spotting guards.

DOCTOR
This way!

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

HALPEN straightens his tie before heading to Ood Conversion. SIGMA follows.

EXT. DAY, OUTSIDE OOD CONVERSION

The DOCTOR and DONNA stop outside another warehouse.

DOCTOR
Oh, can you hear it? I didn't need the map. I should've listened! (uses sonic screwdriver on the door and locks it behind them once they're inside)

INT., OOD CONVERSION

DONNA
Does that mean we're locked in?

DOCTOR
Listen. Listen, listen, listen, listen.

They go down steps and discover cages.

DOCTOR
Oh, my head.

DONNA
What is it?

DOCTOR
Can't you hear it? The singing?

They see the Ood huddled together in one of the cages. The DOCTOR switches on a light.

DONNA
They look different to the others.

DOCTOR
That's because they're natural-born Ood. Unprocessed. Before they're adapted to slavery. Unspoiled. (they squat in front of the cage) That's their song.

DONNA
I can't hear it.

DOCTOR
Do you want to?

DONNA
(faces DOCTOR) Yeah.

DOCTOR
It's the song of captivity.

DONNA
Let me hear it.

DOCTOR
Face me. (places fingertips to her temples) Open your mind. That's it. Hear it, Donna... Hear the music.

DONNA gasps and she faces the Ood, tears running down her face.

DONNA
(breaking) Take it away.

DOCTOR
You sure?

DONNA
I can't bear it. (DOCTOR repeats the process) I'm sorry.

DOCTOR
It's okay.

DONNA
But you can still hear it.

DOCTOR
All the time.

EXT. DAY, OUTSIDE OOD CONVERSION

HALPEN, RYDER and SOLANA arrive outside Ood Conversion. A guard is standing outside.

HALPEN
Well, what's the hold-up?

RYDER
The experimentation lab's maximum security. He's fused the system.

HALPEN
(to guard) Don't just stand there! Get bolt cutters! Rip that door off! Solana, go back to the reps. I don't want any of them wandering off and seeing this. And get them away from the Ood, just in case. Hurry up!

SOLANA
Yes, sir. (leaves)

INT., OOD CONVERSION

The DOCTOR uses the sonic screwdriver on the Ood cage. DONNA hears noise from the level above.

DONNA
They're breaking in.

DOCTOR
Ah, let 'em. (enters cage. The Ood try to shuffle away) What are you holding? (one of the Ood looks at him shyly) Friend. Doctor, Donna, friend. Look at me. Let me see. (the Ood comes closer) That's it. That's it, go on. Go on. (the Ood holds out his cupped hands and removes the top to reveal...)

DONNA
Is that-?

DOCTOR
It's a brain. A hindbrain. The Ood are born with a secondary brain. Like the amygdala in humans, it process memory and emotion. You get rid of that, you wouldn't be Donna anymore. You'd be like an Ood. A processed Ood.

DONNA
So the company...cuts off their brains.

DOCTOR
And stitches on the translator.

DONNA
Like a lobotomy. I spent all that time looking for you, Doctor, because I thought it would be so wonderful out here. I want to go home.

The DOCTOR is stunned by her wish but doesn't have time to react as HALPEN and the others arrive.

GUARD
They're with the Ood, sir.

The DOCTOR slams the cage shut.

DOCTOR
What are you gonna do, then? Arrest me? Lock me up? Well, you're too late! Hah!

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

The DOCTOR and DONNA are being handcuffed to a pole by two guards.

HALPEN
Why don't you just come out and say it? FOTO activists.

DOCTOR
If that's what Friends of the Ood are trying to prove, then yes.

HALPEN
The Ood were nothing without us-just animals roaming around on the ice.

DOCTOR
That's because you can't hear them.

HALPEN
They welcomed it! It's not as if they put up a fight.

DONNA
You idiot! They're born with their brain in their hands, don't you see? That makes them peaceful! They've got to be because a creature like that would have to trust anyone it meets.

DOCTOR
Nice one.

DONNA
Thank you.

HALPEN
The system's worked for 200 years. All we've got is a rogue batch. But the infection is about to be sterilized. (into comm.) Mr Kess, how do we stand?

INT. WAREHOUSE

Guards are moving canisters into position by the fenced-in Ood.

KESS
Canisters primed, sir. As soon as the core heats up, the gas is released. Give it 200 marks...and counting.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

DOCTOR
You're going to gas them?!

HALPEN
Kill the livestock. The classic foot-in-mouth solution. Still works.

INT. WAREHOUSE

KESS chuckles and puts on a gas mask.

INT., OOD CONVERSION

The unprocessed Ood put their hands out to the side.

INT. WAREHOUSE

The fenced-in red-eyes stand in a circle, hands out to their sides.

INT. OOD "SHOWROOM"

SOLANA arrives at the reception area where the reps are still eating and drinking.

SOLANA
I'm sorry. If I could ask you one more time, would all the reps please come through to the education suites?

DRUNK REP
Why move now? It's a free bar.

SOLANA
Could I ask all the Ood to withdraw? It's feeding time.

The Ood grip their heads as if in pain.

DRUNK REP
Ooh, you've upset them! Leave them alone.

SOLANA
I have to insist. Of all the Ood could please leave!

INT. WAREHOUSE

The fenced-in red-eyes join the unprocessed Ood in song, increasing the volume.

INT. OOD "SHOWROOM"

The Ood on reception turn red-eye

SOLANA
Ladies and gentlemen, change of plan. If you could leave by the fire exits.

The DRUNK REP approaches the Ood.

DRUNK REP
I could sell this. I could offer different colours.

The Ood in front of the DRUNK REP puts his translator ball to the man's forehead, killing him. There is panic as the other reps try to escape as the Ood start killing randomly. SOLANA escapes outside.

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

Three guards approach SOLANA.

GUARD
They've gone insane, miss! They've gone mad, all of them!

A group of Ood are approaching.

SOLANA
Just shoot them! Shoot to kill!

SOLANA runs off as the guards open fire. She stops to watch and an Ood comes up behind her and kills her.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

They hear the alarms blaring.

HALPEN
What the hell?

INT. WAREHOUSE

The canisters are counting down. KESS hears the alarms. The red-eyes are even more agitated.

KESS
What's going on out there?!

The exterior door opens and red-eyes enter.

EXT., EXECUTIVE OFFICES

HALPEN, RYDER and SIGMA exit the office into the snow. Guards are shooting at the Ood.

P.A.
Emergency status! Emergency status!

HALPEN stops and looks down on the fighting and confusion.

RYDER
It's a revolution.

HALPEN pushes past RYDER and goes back up the stairs. SIGMA follows.

INT. WAREHOUSE

The red-eyes have locked KESS behind the fence while the canisters continue to countdown. His gas mask is on the other side of the fence.

KESS
Come back! Let me out of here!

The canisters release the gas right at KESS and he screams.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

HALPEN returns to where the DOCTOR and DONNA are handcuffed.

HALPEN
Change of plan.

RYDER
No reports of trouble off-world, sir. It's still contained to the Ood-Sphere.

HALPEN
Then we've got a public duty to stop it before it spreads.

DOCTOR
What's happening?

HALPEN
Everything you wanted, Doctor. No doubt there'll be a full police investigation once this place has been sterilized so I can't risk a bullet to the head. I'll leave you to the mercies of the Ood. (leaves for door)

DOCTOR
But, Mr Halpen, there's something else, isn't there? Something we haven't seen.

HALPEN stops at the door.

DONNA
What do you mean?

DOCTOR
The creature couldn't survive with a separate forebrain and hindbrain, they'd be at war with themselves. There's got to be something else, a third element. Am I right?

HALPEN
Again, so clever.

DOCTOR
It's got to be connected to the red-eye. What is it?

HALPEN looks the DOCTOR in the eye.

HALPEN
It won't exist for very much longer. Enjoy your Ood.

HALPEN, RYDER and the two guards leave. Once they're gone, the DOCTOR and DONNA try to free themselves.

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

HALPEN, RYDER, SIGMA and a guard cross the compound.

HALPEN
Dr Ryder, Warehouse 15.

RYDER
What about this one? (motions to SIGMA)

HALPEN
No! You've not turned. Faithful to the last. Go. Join your people. (they bow their heads and SIGMA leaves) Come on!

As HALPEN and RYDER head off, SIGMA watches before leaving.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

The DOCTOR and DONNA are still trying to free themselves.

DONNA
Well, do something! You're the one with all the tricks! You must've met Houdini!

DOCTOR
These are really good handcuffs!

DONNA
Oh, I'm glad of that. At least we've got quality!

The door opens and the DOCTOR and DONNA stop their struggles when they see the Ood standing there. The Ood advance.

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

HALPEN and RYDER make their way to Warehouse 15 behind the guard who tries to clear a path.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

The Doctor and Donna try to convince the Ood that they are friendly, their frantic words overlapping.

DOCTOR
Doctor, Donna, friends!

DONNA
The circle must be broken!

DOCTOR
Doctor, Donna, friends!

DONNA
The circle must be broken!

DOCTOR
Doctor, Donna, friends!

DONNA
The circle must be broken!

DOCTOR
Friends, friends, friends!

DONNA
The circle must be broken!

DOCTOR
Doctor, Donna, friends!

DONNA
The circle must be broken!

DOCTOR
Doctor, Donna, friends!

DONNA
The circle must be broken!

INT., OOD CONVERSION

Their voices echo back to the unprocessed Ood in the cage.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

DOCTOR
Friends, friends, friends!

DONNA
The circle must be broken!

DOCTOR
Doctor, Donna, friends!

DONNA
The circle must be broken!

INT., OOD CONVERSION

The Ood in the cage stand, their hands out.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

The DOCTOR and DONNA speak even faster as the Ood get closer.

DOCTOR
Doctor, Donna, friends!

DONNA
The circle must be broken!

DOCTOR
Doctor, Donna, friends!

DONNA
The circle must be broken!

The Ood hold out their translator balls but stop inches away from the DOCTOR and DONNA.

INT., OOD CONVERSION

The Ood begin to sing.

INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE

The translator balls switch off and the Ood hold their heads in their hands. One lifts its head, eyes normal.

OOD
Doctor. Donna. Friends.

DONNA
That's me! Us!

DOCTOR
Yes, that's us! Friends! Oh, yes!

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

HALPEN and RYDER continue to Warehouse 15. An Ood attacks their guard. RYDER goes to him but HALPEN holds him back.

HALPEN
No! Leave him! Leave him.

EXT., EXECUTIVE OFFICES

The DOCTOR and DONNA run down the stairs and across the compound dodging the fighting. The DOCTOR pauses, trying to get his bearings.

DOCTOR
I don't know where it is! I don't know where they've gone!

DONNA
What are we looking for?!

They continue running.

DOCTOR
Might be underground, like some sort of cave or a cavern or...

EXT. DAY, OUTSIDE WAREHOUSE 15

HALPEN and RYDER reach the warehouse and HALPEN enters his code.

COMPUTER
Warehouse 15, door open.

They run inside.

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

The DOCTOR and DONNA get thrown to the ground by an explosion.

DOCTOR
All right?

DONNA nods. When the smoke clears, they see SIGMA standing there.

INT. WAREHOUSE 15

HALPEN
It's always been an option. My grandfather drew up the plans. That's the advantage of a family-run business, Dr Ryder-the personal touch.

RYDER
But we should evacuate. If we can get to the rocket shed-

HALPEN
No need. We've got this. (opens large cabinet) Detonation packs. (takes out devices and hands them to RYDER) Place them around the circumference. We're gonna blow it up. This thing dies...so do the Ood. (begins placing the detonation packs along the railing)

EXT. DAY, OUTSIDE WAREHOUSE 15

SIGMA leads the DOCTOR and DONNA to the warehouse. The DOCTOR uses the sonic screwdriver on the panel and the door opens.

INT. WAREHOUSE 15

Once inside, the DOCTOR and DONNA see what it is that is keeping the Ood from fighting each other-a giant brain kept within an energy field.

DOCTOR
The Ood brain. Now it all makes sense. That's the missing link. The third element, binding them together. Forebrain, hindbrain and this. The telepathic centre. It's a shared mind...connecting all the Ood in song.

A weapon clicks. The DOCTOR and DONNA turn to see HALPEN holding a gun on them.

HALPEN
Cargo. I can always go into cargo. I've got the rockets, I've got the sheds. Smaller business. Much more manageable without livestock.

RYDER
He's mined the area.

DONNA
You're gonna kill it.

HALPEN
They found that thing centuries ago beneath the northern glacier.

DOCTOR
(to DONNA) Those pylons.

DONNA
In a circle. "The circle must be broken."

DOCTOR
Dampening the telepathic field, stopping the Ood from connecting for 200 years.

HALPEN
And you, Ood Sigma, you brought them here. I expected better.

SIGMA
My place is at your side, sir. (moves to stand beside HALPEN)

HALPEN
(chuckles) Still subservient. Good Oo-(can't finish his sentence)

DONNA
If that barrier thing's in place, how come the Ood started breaking out?

DOCTOR
Maybe it's taken centuries to adapt. The subconscious reaching out.

RYDER
But the process was too slow, had to be accelerated. You should never have given me access to the controls, Mr Halpen. I lowered the barrier to its minimum. Friends of the Ood, sir. It's taken me ten years to infiltrate the company. And I succeeded.

HALPEN
Yes. Yes, you did. (pushes RYDER over the railing and he is absorbed by the brain)

DONNA
You...murdered him.

HALPEN
Very observant, Ginger. Now then, can't say I've ever shot anyone before...can't say I'm gonna like it, but, uh, it's not exactly a normal day, is it? Still... (holds up gun to fire)

SIGMA
Would you like a drink, sir?

HALPEN
(laughs) I think hair loss is the least of my problems right now, thanks.

SIGMA stands in front of the DOCTOR and DONNA, holding out a glass.

SIGMA
Please have a drink, sir. (the DOCTOR puts a hand on his shoulder)

HALPEN
If-if you're gonna stand in their way, I'll shoot you too. (has trouble speaking the last words, almost talking in slow motion)

SIGMA
Please have a drink, sir.

HALPEN
Have--have you...poisoned me?

SIGMA
Natural Ood must never kill, sir.

DOCTOR
What is that stuff?

SIGMA
Ood-graft suspended in a biological compound.

HALPEN is looking decidedly unwell.

HALPEN
What the hell does that mean?

DOCTOR
Oh dear.

HALPEN
Tell me!

DOCTOR
Funny thing, the subconscious. Takes all sorts of shapes. It came out in the red-eye as revenge. It came out in the rabid Ood as anger. And then there was patience. All that intelligence and mercy focused on Ood Sigma. How's the hair loss, Mr Halpen?

HALPEN
What have you done?

DOCTOR
Oh, they've been preparing you for a very long time. And now you're standing next to the Ood brain. Mr Halpen, can you hear it? Listen.

HALPEN hears the Ood song.

HALPEN
What have you-I'm...not-

SIGMA steps out of the way. HALPEN drops the gun, grips his head and cries in agony. He pulls at his scalp and it comes away revealing an Ood head underneath. Tentacles come out of his mouth.

DONNA
They-they turned him into an Ood?

DOCTOR
Yup.

DONNA
He's an Ood.

DOCTOR
I noticed.

OOD HALPEN makes a strange gurgling noise before coughing up his secondary brain.

SIGMA
He has become Ood-kind and we will take care of him.

DONNA
It's weird, being with you. I can't tell what's right and what's wrong anymore.

DOCTOR
It's better that way. People who know for certain tend to be like Mr Halpen. (there's a loud beeping) Oh! (turns off detonation packs) That's better. And
now... Ood Sigma, will you allow me the honour?

SIGMA
It is yours, Doctor

DOCTOR
Oh yes! (goes to the equipment powering the field) Stifled for over 200 years but not anymore. The circle is broken. The Ood can sing!

The field around the brain shuts off and the song is heard by everyone. The DOCTOR laughs.

DONNA
I can hear it!

SIGMA raises his arms

INT., OOD CONVERSION

The caged Ood raise their arms.

EXT. DAY, BASE GROUNDS

The fighting between the Ood and the humans stops. The guards lay down their weapons and the former red-eyes stand in a circle and join in the song.

EXT. DAY

The Ood are standing with the DOCTOR and DONNA just outside the TARDIS.

DOCTOR
The message has gone out. That song resonated across the galaxies. Everyone heard it. Everyone knows. The rockets are bringing them back. The Ood are coming

home.

SIGMA
We thank you, Doctor-Donna, friends of Ood-kind. And what of you now? Will you stay? There is room in the song for you.

DOCTOR
Oh-I've-I've sorta got a song of my own, thanks.

SIGMA
I think your song must end soon.

DOCTOR
Meaning?

SIGMA
Every song must end.

DOCTOR
Yeah. (to DONNA) Um, what about you? Do you still want to go home?

DONNA
No. Definitely not.

DOCTOR
Then we'll be off.

SIGMA
Take this song with you.

DONNA
We will.

DOCTOR
Always.

SIGMA
And know this, Doctor-Donna, you will never be forgotten. Our children will sing of the Doctor-Donna, and our children's children, and the wind and the ice

and the snow will carry your names forever.

The DOCTOR and DONNA walk to the TARDIS and dematerialise leaving the Ood singing.
